As the adage goes: Do not judge a book by its cover. Apparently, this saying does not apply to Muslim women. People shouldn’t make assumptions about a person based on their attire. But don’t get me wrong; wearing the Hijab is an open expression of a woman’s Islam.

Regardless of passing judgment, why even bother to wear the Hijab in the first place? Great question, and a question that deserves an answer if it is asked out of curiosity or comprehension and not out of disdain.

First of all, as we have mentioned before, anything ordained by Allah must be accomplished:

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

Surah An-Nour (24 – 31)

Now, before going into more detail about the reasons for wearing the Hijab, let us see what exactly is the Hijab. Basically, the proper Hijab is not just a scarf or a head veil worn around the hair; It is a complete expression of modesty and dignity, it is a way of life, a mindset. Only the face and hands may be uncovered.

Asma, daughter of AbuBakr, entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ) wearing thin clothes. The Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ) turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma’, when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to his face and hands.

Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Clothing, Book 33, Hadith 4092.

The attire worn must be opaque, loose, and non-attracting the gaze by its design or color. Now, let’s look at the advantages for women who wear it.

To any sane-minded person, the Hijab is a sexual turn-off. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a guy… don’t need to say more, and sexuality is not taboo in Islam; it is however to be expressed between husband and wife intimately in the privacy of their home. A community void of sexualization or sexual connotation builds a healthier society.

Plus, so much of society is built on appearances; physical perfection. Islam, via the Hijab, liberates women from these imposed norms. You become judged by who you are, not what you wear. In western societies, women have been duped into believing that showing their body is a sign of liberty; some notion that wearing g-strings, low-rise pants, and sport-bras is somehow connected to freedom. If these things were truly comfortable; believe me, men would be wearing them all the time. These clothes (or threads) were not conceived for women, they are only there to appeal to men and are sold under the falsehood of trend and fashion only to get women into them. The proof is in advertising; you want to sell beer, here are women dancing in tuques and bikini; want to advertise the Grand-Prix, looks like a strip club; watching a sporting event, I’ve never seen many male cheerleaders!?! Women have been objectified, used, and abused by sexuality in the name of liberty, and they don’t even notice it! And if it would only be left to men to decide, why would anyone be against this, this curtails his desires. It is Allah, through his word who puts an end to this by empowering the woman with freedom; freedom from peer pressure, fashion, and physical perfection.

Some point out that Muslim women who wear the Hijab are secluded from society. If that is so, is the problem the Muslim women who wear the Hijab, or is it how society looks at her? The less something is present in society, the more difficult it is for the minority. However, the bond created within this minority is strong; a sisterhood of sorts. Understanding what one goes through, living the same reality as someone else is encouraging and fortifying.

One last note about the Hijab, many critics of Islam point out that it is ā€œunfairā€ that the woman must cover up while the man doesn’t. Actually, this is not true, men also have a dress code; although different (some would argue less strict). Since the nature of man and woman is different; it is kind of normal for the dress code to be different (I hope I don’t have to go into detail on an anatomy class). Moreover, the man has a requirement not required from women (because he is different). It is forbidden for a man to shave his beard:

… the Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ) ordered trimming the mustache and leaving the beard to grow.

Jami At-Tirmidhi, Chapters on Manners, Vol. 5, Book 41, Hadith 2764.

Now, Muslim men and women apply this dress code in order to satisfy Allah, we have also seen practical reasons and advantages for doing so; but there is one reason we have not explored, nor have I seen in any literature: similarity.

As Casanova was known to find beauty in each woman. We are no Casanovas, and thankfully so; yet the more women cover-up, the more they look alike. Until you get married and discover the true beauty of your wife; for she will be the most beautiful since you did not have to compare her with any other woman. As it goes for men, differentiation is predominant in two features of the face; that is why when it comes to face recognition, the eyes and the jaw region are targeted. So by having bearded men, they resemble one another more than if they were shaved.

Now, one might ask what is the criterion in choosing a partner (i.e. husband or wife)

The Messenger of Allah said: “When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to (someone under the care) of one of you, then marry to him. If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and abounding discord (Fasad).”

Jami Al-Tirmidhi, The Book on Marriage, Vol. 2, Book 6, Hadith 1084.

The Prophet said: “Indeed the woman is married for her religion, her wealth, and her beauty, so take the one with religion, and may your hands be dusty.” (the last part is a kind of damnation if you do not follow this advice, not commonly used any more in Arabic)

Jami Al-Tirmidhi, The Book on Marriage, Vol. 2, Book 6, Hadith 1086.

Looks are secondary to religion and character; for even if you have the most beautiful wife/husband, if you are not satisfied, you will still search somewhere else.

The Holocaust that was perpetrated during WWII was one of the worst massacres throughout history. Not a week goes by (in North America) without hearing, reading, or seeing about it on the radio, in the newspapers, or on an ad. This is only normal, a denomination that was persecuted because of their race/religion cannot and must not forget about this, and everyone should learn from this ordeal.

Yet, the direct descendants of the people that survived (or not) this terrible piece of history are committing the same crimes. The Zionist state is evicting Palestinians from their homes, stealing their land, building illegal settlements on it, bombing civilians indiscriminately, killing women and children… What astonishes me the most is when supporters of Israel say that the Holocaust is not comparable to anything. You know what, they’re right, the Holocaust lasted a decade and what’s going on in Palestine has been going on for over 70 years!!!

As the saying goes:

ā€œThose who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.ā€

Winston Churchill

The only problem is that those who are doomed at the moment are not those who are repeating it, they are suffering at the hands of those who are repeating it.

Unfortunately, this is not a new situation. This has been going on for centuries. The pretext for the Crusades was the desecration of the church of the Holy sepulchre that was ordered by an idiotic Caliph, which led to two hundred years of destruction and tens of thousands of civilians being massacred in the name of Christendom. The Mongol tribes were continuously attacked by invaders until they became strong enough and they set the world ablaze killing and pillaging everything in their way. Colonial powers paused their European squabbles only to seize land and people on all other continents. Nazi Germany wanted to avenge the insults inflicted upon them after WWI, so they invaded the European continent and perpetrated the Holocaust along the way. The Soviet Union came to be after the overthrow of the tsar who enslaved his people for his greatness, the Politburo did the same in the name of an ideology. The United States of America gained liberty from Great Britain and freed their constituents only to crush anyone that does not follow their international hegemony.

So what is going on in Palestine is nothing new, injustice is most often going to be perpetrated by the strongest. But if history has taught us anything, is that history does not look fondly on injustice. Personally, I am not concerned about the eyes of history, I am only interested in what pleases Allah. In this, this is what Allah has to say on the matter of injustice:

ā€œO My slaves, I have prohibited Myself injustice; and have made oppression unlawful for you, so do not oppress one another.ā€

Sahih Muslim

Last week, we discussed about mothers in depth, but what about wives? They have their place too, right!?! Let’s just start with:

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Surah Ar-Rum (30 – 21)

Therefore, the link of a wedded couple is of love, mercy, and tranquility.

As for what the prophet had to say:

Thawban said: ā€œWhen the Verse concerning silver and gold was revealed, they said: ‘What kind of wealth should we acquire?’ Umar said: ‘I will tell you about that.’ So he rode on his camel and caught up with the Prophet, and I followed him. He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah what kind of wealth should we acquire?’ He said: ‘Let one of you acquire a thankful heart, a tongue that remembers Allah and a believing wife who will help him with regard to the Hereafter.’ ā€

Sunan Ibn Majah, The Chapters on Marriage, Vol. 3, Book 9, Hadith 1856.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, ā€œWhoever Allah provides with a righteous wife, then Allah has assisted him in half of his religion. Let him fear Allah regarding the second half.ā€

Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat, Al-Tabari, 992 (translated from Arabic).

the Prophet said: “The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives.”

Sunan ibn Majah, The Chapters on Marriage, Vol. 3, Book 9, Hadith 1977.

As for the choice of wife, this is what the prophet gave as advice:

The Prophet said: “Indeed the woman is married for her religion, her wealth, and her beauty, so take the one with religion, and may your hands be dusty.” (the last part is a kind of damnation if you do not follow this advice, not commonly used anymore in Arabic)

Jami Al-Tirmidhi, The Book on Marriage, Vol. 2, Book 6, Hadith 1086.

No kidding, two of the most beautiful stories I have ever heard had to do with this subject. Of course, there has to be a little romance involved, which makes it all the more beautiful. For, instance, the following story.

It is narrated that in the first century after the Prophet Muhammad, there lived a pious man who constantly looked for knowledge and used to give all his time to this cause but he was poor. One day he left home due to his extreme hunger since he had found nothing to eat at home and so he ended up heading towards one of the gardens on the roadside. This garden was full of apple trees and one of which had a few of its branches hanging outside the fence on the roadside. His inner self started whispering to him to eat an apple to remove his hunger and that no one would see him. After all, the apple garden wouldn’t be affected by the absence of only one apple. He plucked an apple and sat down to eat it until his hunger disappeared. But when he went back home, his consciousness started aching him and he started to ask himself how he could do such a thing. Sitting down, he started asking himself how he could eat an apple which belongs to another Muslim and yet he never asked his permission before plucking it. Neither had he asked the owner for his forgiveness. Getting up the next morning, he headed outdoor in search of this garden’s owner until he found him. This young man then told the owner:

“Uncle, yesterday extreme hunger got great hold of me and I ate an apple from your garden without you knowing and today I have come to ask for your permission for having taken it.”

The owner replied:

“By Allah, I will not forgive you. In fact, I am angry from you until the Day of Judgement where I will complain to Allah about you.”

The young lad then started pleading to him to forgive him and that he was ready to do anything for him on condition that he forgives him and makes him clean of sins again through this forgiveness. He continued pleading and the owner refuses and grows more and more stubborn insisting on his point. Leaving the garden, the young lad followed at his heels pleading that he change his mind until finally this owner arrived at his own home, entered and closed the door. The young lad remained waiting by the door in anticipation of seeing him once again when afternoon prayer would come when he had to leave for prayers. When at last, the owner came out, he found the lad still standing outside the door with tears streaming down his beard making his face gleam with more faith and knowledge which had already previously prevailed on his face.

The lad:

“Uncle, I am ready to work as a gardener in this garden of yours without a salary the whole of my life or any other thing you wish me to carry out for you on condition that you forgive me.”

At this moment, the garden owner stopped to think for a while and then said: “Son, I am ready to forgive you now but on one condition….”

The lad got so happy and his face once again got filled with joy and he replied:

“Give me any condition you wish, uncle.”

The owner:

“My only condition is that you marry my daughter!!!”

The lad was shocked from this condition, got stunned and couldn’t understand this condition. The owner continued:

“But son… you must know that my daughter is blind, deaf and does not speak. She doesn’t walk either and is always seated. For a long time now, I have been searching for a husband for her whom I can trust to take care of her and accept her as she is with all her features which I mentioned to you. I will forgive you only if you accept to marry her.”

The lad was once again shocked with this second disaster. He then started thinking how he would be able to live with such a burden especially that he was still young and on his first steps in his career life. How could she take care of him and look after his house when she had such defects?

He then started telling himself:

“Have patience regarding her and at least get saved from the Hereafter’s punishment which this apple would cause you.”

He then looked towards the owner and said:

“Uncle, I have accepted your daughter and I ask Allah to reward me well for my intention and that He rewards me with something better than what He inflicted me with.”

The owner replies:

“Well then son, your date is next Thursday at my place for the celebration of your marriage and I will be responsible of her wedding gift.”

When Thursday came, this young lad came walking with heavy steps, full of sorrow, with a broken heart unlike any other groom on his wedding day. When he knocked on the door, her father opened the door and let him in. After they had sat and talked a bit, the bride’s father told the lad:

“Please feel free to enter the room where your bride is seated, and may Allah place His blessings on you both and around you both. May He bring onto both of you all goodness and mercy.”

He then took him by his hand and led him to the room where his daughter sat waiting. When he opened the door and looked inside, the lad found seated a girl whose face was whiter than the moon and whose hair hang loosely on her shoulders like silk. She then got up and walked towards him with her shoulders stretched outwards and told him:

“Assalamu ā€˜Alaykum my husband.”

Standing in his place, the lad stood staring at her as if he was in front of a lady of Paradise. He couldn’t believe his eyes and just didn’t know what had happened or why her father had said such bad things about her. She at once understood what was going through his mind and at once went nearer to him, held his hand and kissed it saying:

“I am blind from looking towards forbidden things and I am deaf from listening to forbidden talk and I am unable to speak about forbidden things. My feet too do not walk towards what is forbidden… I am the only child of my father and for a couple of years now, he has been searching for a good pious husband for me. So when you came to him asking his permission for an apple and weeping for its sake, he told me: ‘Whoever fears from eating an apple for which he hasn’t asked permission for acquiring, then he will surely look after my daughter and fear Allah in treating her badly’. So congratulations to me for having you as a husband and congratulations to my father for having you as his son-in-law.” Eventually, the couple would be blessed with a son named Nu’man; more commonly known as the great Muslim scholar imam Abu Hanifa.

There is also the story of the daughter of the milk lady

One evening, when the Caliph Umar Ibn Al-Khattab was making his nightly round to see the condition of his people, he heard a woman say to her daughter, “Get up and mix water with the milk we are going to sell.

“Mother,” replied the girl, “are you not aware of what Umar has said about this?

– What did he say?

– He said that Prophet Muhammad said, “He who cheats us is not among us. “

– My dear! Do what I tell you, because you are in a place where Umar does not see you.

– Mother! If Umar does not see what we are doing, the Lord of Umar sees what we are doing. By Allah, I find it unacceptable to obey my Lord in public and disobey Him when I am alone. “

Umar immediately returned to his house and spoke to his sons and said: “Which of you is ready to marry the daughter of the milk lady; and if none of you are ready, I will. One must not miss such an opportunity. As a matter of fact, one of his sons, ā€˜Asim, proposed and married her.

As for their descendance, they were blessed with a daughter named Layla, who married a man named Abdulaziz. They too were blessed, with a son they called Umar; Umar ibn Abdulaziz. He eventually became Caliph, while other Caliphs of the Ummayad dynasty reveled in luxury, Umar bin Abdulaziz upheld standards of justice and austerity in government that reminded the people of the time of his great grandfather; the second rightly guided Caliph; Umar ibn Al-Khattab.

When one is blessed with a righteous companion, Allah often blesses the offspring too; sometimes for multiple generations.

Both are racist and think they are superior.

Both kill women and children.

Both are military powers.

The only difference is that the Holocaust lasted 10 years, while war crimes of the Zionist state has been going on for 3/4 of a century and is still going strong today…

A multitude of great Muslim scholars (in religion and science) were orphaned on their father’s side and became great humans who illuminated the world. Just to namedrop a few: Imam Al-AwzaƏ, Imam Al-ShafĆÆ, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Imam Al-Bukhari, Imam Jalaluddin As-Siyuti. Not only have these scholars written great books, I mean books have been written about these people; and their mothers all had incredible roles in their upbringing.

Now let’s visit the teachings of the prophet in the regard of mothers:

Abu Hurayra said, “The Prophet was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, to whom should I be dutiful?’ ‘Your mother,’ he replied. He was asked, ‘Then whom?’ ‘Your mother,’ he replied. He was asked, ‘Then whom?’ ‘Your mother,’ he replied. He was asked, ‘Then whom?’ He replied, ‘Your father.'”

Sahih Al-Albani, Book of Parents, Book 1, Hadith 5.

“O Messenger of Allah! I want to go out and fight (in Jihad) and I have come to ask your advice.” He said: “Do you have a mother?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then stay with her, for Paradise is beneath her feet.”

Sunan An-Nasa’i, The Book of Jihad, Vol. 1, Book 25, Hadith 3106.

Let’s see what the companions of the prophet said:

Ibn ‘Umar saw a Yamani man going around the House (the Kaaba) while carrying his mother on his back, saying, ‘I am your humble camel. If her mount is frightened, I am not frightened.’ Then he asked, ‘Ibn ‘Umar? Do you think that I have repaid her?’ He replied, ‘No, not even for a single groan (contraction).’

Sahih Al-Albani, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Repaying Parents, Book 1, Hadith 11.

The place of your own mother in Islam is only second to Allah. Do not forget this!

Normally, the end of the month of Ramadan is supposed to be a day to rejoice, since it is one of the two days that are ordained by Allah to be celebrated during the year. However, this year, the festivities have been celebrated with mixed feelings.

The reason… because of what is presently going on in Jerusalem, Al-Quds, Palestine. The Zionist state is on a mission to seclude, destroy and erase anything that is Muslim or has to do with Islam. From attacking Muslim worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque to destroying entire neighborhood blocks with airstrikes.

This weekend was supposed to be a time to rejoice with friends and family. Yet, even with Covid still going strong, we will be demonstrating this Saturday afternoon all across the country for the following three reasons.

So I call any and all who care about justice in this world to take to the streets in protest of what is happening in Palestine at the hands of the Zionist state.

To find out what is going on around you (in Canada) in this regard, Here’s the list of all the rallies scheduled in Canada that we know about:

#sheikhjarrah #gazzaunderattack #alquds

Eid Al-Fitr is a day to rejoice We have just been through a month of obedience, self-discipline, and adoration. Like we’ve said in past weeks, Ramadan is the month of change, and change takes work. That is what one has been doing for the past month. Now, Allah has promised forgiveness and reward for those who accomplished their fast righteously. Plus, He has given us a day of celebration to feast and enjoy with family and friends.

But there is one aspect of this day that is a constant reminder of what the essence of Islam: Zakat Al-Fitr. This Zakat (alms/charity) is a reminder that not all have the same means, it is a reminder to share with your brothers and sisters in faith and in humanity, it is a reminder to always thank Allah, and it is especially a reminder of the justice of Allah.

With all the injustice caused by us humans, this is one day that Muslims can momentarily right that wrong, so all can partake in this day of celebration. The fortunate can share by giving food to the less fortunate so everyone has something to feast on and enjoy.

So yes, enjoy yourselves. Yes, have fun. But don’t forget to thank Allah and share his gifts.

…Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous.

Surah Al-Ma’idah (5 – 27)

Eid Mubarak!

As we have mentioned earlier, there might be some that don’t agree with some principles in Islam (especially some women, when it comes to defining who bears responsibility in a family), but to say that women don’t have their place in Islam… just wait one second!

First of all, let’s just state how important women are in Islam (since Muhammad) historically speaking:

The first person to believe in the prophet Muhammad as a messenger was a woman (his wife Khadija).

The first martyr in Islam was a woman (Somaya, the wife of Yaser).

The Prophet Muhammad had no male surviving offspring, all women.

His lineage (even if he cannot help them in any way) is through his daughter, a woman (Fatima).

Multiple women have taught and transmitted religious teachings to men for centuries (from AĆÆsha, the wife of the prophet to Hassan Al-Basri’s sister).

The oldest continually functioning university (Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco) was founded by a woman (Fatima Al-Fihriya).

If we want an example of how important one single Muslim woman can be in the eyes of a Muslim, we could see the story of Al-Mu’tasim. Everyone knows the legend (myth) of Helen of Troy, how she is the face that sailed 1000 ships; all that because of a love triangle. Well, for Muslims, we don’t need to make up that drama. In 837, the armies of Emperor Theophilos, 100 000 strong, attacked, and destroyed the Muslim cities of Zibatrah and Malatya. Fleeing refugees made their way to Samarra where they spoke of the horror of the attack. On that day, a Muslim woman who was taken captive cried out: O Mu’tasim!!! After word reached him of her story; this was the answer he gave to Theophilos: “Ya Kalb Ar-Rum! (Oh you Roman dog!) I have an army of men that stretch from where I stand (Baghdad) to where you stand (Constantinople), who love to fight and die as much as your men love to live.”

After the Muslim armies laid siege and entered as victors (in Amorium), Al-Mu’tasim freed the Muslim prisoners including the woman in question.

This is how women are perceived and treated in Islam, historically, and today.

Now, don’t think that because there are not as many ā€œnotableā€ women as men throughout history that women did not have anything to do with it. You know the saying that behind each great man, there is a great woman. Well, in our case, it is an even greater woman. How many mothers, wives, sisters, daughters… counseled, consoled, and consolidated their men into being men for the ages?

As we have mentioned earlier this month, Ramadan is the holiest month. And the last 10 nights of the month are the best nights of the year. And Laylat Ul-Qadr is the most important night of them all. Laylat Ul-Qadr is worth more than 1000 months. That’s like over 80 years!

Imagine, your actions on that night are of 80 years worth: 80 years of praying, 80 years of Dua (supplication), 80 years of reading the Quran… and this is just on the individual level. Imagine funding the digging of a well in Africa, or clothing a refugee family on the border of Syria, or sponsoring an Afghan orphan, or feeding a homeless person… giving ensures help and warrants reward. Imagine receiving the Dua of a person in need that doesn’t even know of your existence till the day of judgment. Do you even know how much that is worth in the balance?!? Only Allah knows.

On that front:

ā€œIndeed charity extinguishes the Lord’s anger and it protects against the evil death.ā€

Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, Vol. 2, Book 2, Hadith 664.

Imagine how merciful Allah will be when you give during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, and one of those occasions falls on Laylat Ul-Qadr…

May Allah Accept our offering, for Allah only accepts from the pious.

Ameen

ā€œWomen don’t have their place in Islam.ā€ Every time I hear this, my eyes rollback. Whether it be in the media or some ignorant foe, this always brings a sarcastic smile to my lips. What is that other great catchphrase? Oh yeah: ā€œWomen are not respected in Islam.ā€

Let’s see:

For 1400 years, women in Islam have always been equal in creation in front of Allah, they have the right to inherit, marry, trade, invest, work, own, buy, sell, seek knowledge and teach. These rights have only been recently accorded in the West in the past century or the past decades.

It is not Eve that is to blame for the descent of Adam from Eden, but both of their sin for disobeying the commandment of Allah (there is no such thing as original sin in Islam).

A woman has the right to accept or refuse a marriage proposal (so does the man and the woman’s tutor). It could be for any reason (she does not have to give one); the attitude of the man, an inkling of sorts, the wedding gift (there is no dowry in Islam, especially not one given by the wife. It is a ā€œMahrā€, wedding gift, from man to woman)…

The most astonishing and deer act to one’s person is to keep one’s own name (last name). It is something that you are born with and survives even after one’s death. It is a blood-bond that ties you from the womb. In European societies, the woman would acquire her husband’s last name, as if she was his property; just as slaves would acquire their master’s name (ever wonder why African-Americans are named Jonhson and not Mokimbo). Until the 1800’s, a man would be responsible for his spouse’s actions in a court of law. You know the expression: ā€œthe law is an assā€, well check out Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist to find out why.

Women in Islam have a set percentage of the inheritance, including wealth, infrastructure, and land. Whereas in European societies… often, it was only the eldest son that inherited. Nowadays, it is not better, one can decide to leave his wealth to who he wishes (some even leave it for their pets; that’s freedom without limits).

What I mean by all this is that there has been an amazing liberation of women done in Islam, historically, and even as we speak today. The only part that people don’t tend to agree with, is the limitations to these rights and freedoms. All of which can be easily explained and understood in a greater picture, as we shall do In Sha Allah these coming weeks.
